About this Learning Opportunity

Many students are not aware of the relationship between fractions and decimals. This workshop suggests ways to help students to see and make connections between the two. It will also focus on the misconceptions that kids have regarding decimals and will work through examples of meaningful activities to promote a deeper understanding of decimals as an extension of our place value system. It will also look at decimals as fractions with special rules.

This session is based on the work of Cathy Fosnot and First Steps in Math. It aligns with the intent and spirit of the current Mathematics curriculum.

This learning opportunity is being provided through funding from Alberta Education.

About the Facilitator

Keith Van De Keere is a recently retired school administrator who has focused his last 7 years on being a Math Curriculum Coordinator and Coach for school districts, working with teachers in workshop settings as well as providing in-class support for individual teachers from Kindergarten through Grade 8.

He asks teachers to provide student focused learning within a community of learners. This requires teachers to become better “kid watchers” in order to find what is really understood by students, and then responding accordingly.

Keith has recently been chosen to work in western Canada with Cathy Fosnot to provide learning opportunities for teachers who want to create and maintain a dynamic math classroom experience for kids.
