About this Learning Opportunity
This 4-part series is intended for any staff who works in a school setting, supporting students in some capacity. The topics below are outlined to explore perspectives of embracing neurodiversity and better navigating supports and strategies that engage all learners. Each week participants will look at shifts to perspective that allow them to make changes to their environments and interactions, building a toolbox of strategies and supports they can implement in their classroom environments.
Session #1 - Introduction to Neurodiversity and Autism
Neurodiversity in our classrooms creates a strong community of learners who bring unique strengths and perspectives. It is important to continue to shift our practice to better support and embrace all learner profiles. In this session, participants will learn about neurodiversity and begin to structure their understanding of profiles of learners that will help them in pairing strategies and supports in the other 3 parts of this series.
Session #2 - Reframing Challenging Behaviour through an Emotional Regulation Approach
Each learner in our spaces brings unique strengths and may also experience different challenges or areas of need. In this session, participants will explore a shift from a traditional behaviour management approach to a more responsive, neuro-affirming, emotional regulation approach.
Session #3 - Considering Sensory Profiles for Neurodiverse Students
The sensory inputs in the classroom environment can play a big role in the experience a neurodiverse student has in their learning space. This session will look at considerations of the sensory diet of each student, and how to support sensory seekers and sensory avoiders.
Session #4 - Exploring Engagement and Student Interests with Neurodiverse Students
Many neurodiverse students have unique strengths and interests that can be embraced to support their engagement and participation in classroom routines. This session will support participants to expand their perspective on engagement, task completion and participation in routines.
