About this Learning Opportunity
Have you been struggling to determine why your students are unable to grasp basic numeracy concepts?
This session will present Cross-Number puzzles based on extensive Math Recovery research and theory.
As students work through the Cross-Number puzzles, you will be able to easily identify the concepts. Not
only does it then become clear why they are “not getting it,” but more importantly, what needs to be done
so they can move forward.
Why is this session relevant to teachers?
Why this is an important session: It explains the increasingly popular Math Recovery approach to
numeracy intervention and provides a unique and powerful tool for teachers to use with students
struggling in math.
What will be the learning: Developmental levels students go through when learning number concepts
and number operations, outcomes at each of these levels, and how to identify the missed outcomes.
Focus: Numeracy concepts.
Takeaway: Familiarity with numeracy development and also have a means to easily identify missed
outcomes and move students forward.
Alberta Curriculum Alignment: Grades K-5 Organizing idea: Quantity is measured with numbers that
enable counting, labelling, comparing, and operating.

About the Facilitator
Michelle Werkman
Michelle Werkman has taught both high school and elementary school and began her career about ten years ago, which marked the date that her youngest of four children began school. She’s married to a grain farmer and cattle farmer with only about 37 cows (but when we round them up, we have 40- ????). Most of her recent experience has been in the Grade 6 classroom, but she has taught both lower and higher grades. Her favorite course to teach is definitely math and has completed some PD presentations on math assessments and critical thinking. That pretty much ‘sums’ it up????!
