About this Learning Opportunity
Starting school can be overwhelming for students who are born and raised in Canada. For students who are from a non-English speaking country, entering the Canadian school system for the first time can also be overwhelming, and are not yet able to share their feelings in English. They also need time to build those survival language skills to meet their needs and make friends.
This two-hour session will address how teachers and schools can welcome elementary students new to English and Canada.
Key outcomes:
• Steps to create a language rich environment
• Steps to create a culturally rich environment
• Planning for language development
• Scaffolding strategies and resources
(This is a repeat session)
