About this learning opportunity

This series of three 2-hour online learning sessions will engage educators in grades 1 – 8 in an exploration of best practices to support English language learners in all elementary classrooms. 

Together, we’ll examine the processes of language learning and how elementary teachers can build in classroom instructional practices, aligned with the Alberta ELL Benchmarks, that facilitate the development of their students’ English proficiency in speaking, listening, reading and writing.  We’ll look at how the affirmation of diverse students’ linguistic and cultural identities provides critical support for language learning.  We will survey print and online resources that facilitate language learning for English language learners in elementary classrooms.  Practices, projects and resources that enable effective online distance learning for English language learners will be shared.  Strategies for promoting inclusion and engagement of parents and the community will also be considered.   

About the facilitator(s)

Paula Markus retired from the role of ESL/ELD Program Co-ordinator with the Toronto District School Board in 2017. She is currently a sessional lecturer on supporting English Language Learners in the Masters of Teaching Program at OISE/University of Toronto. Paula is the founder of the “Celebrating Linguistic Diversity” Conference, Ontario’s largest professional gathering of K–12 teachers of English language learners.
