Language learners learn the basics of reading in a second language quickly, but comprehension takes longer. Research has shown that learners can acquire skills in decoding, word recognition, and spelling within roughly two years, but more complex skills, such as reading comprehension and writing, take many more years (Connell, 2004).  Giving students the best education possible and preparing them for their future goals lies at the core of our education system.  Learning to read and reading to learn are essential to students’ success.  Teachers across Canada are continually expanding their professional expertise, seeking ways to support student learning inside and outside the classroom.  This workshop will present research-based teaching strategies intended in enhance reading instruction to develop stronger literacy skills in all learners.

Léo-James Lévesque est professeur adjoint avec la School of Education de St. Thomas University, à Fredericton, au Nouveau-Brunswick, Canada. Il compte plus de 30 années d'enseignement de la langue française dans les programmes d'immersion. Expert en littératie, Léo-James a pour mission de transmettre le goût de lire et d'écrire aux enfants. Il a participé à la conception et à l'élaboration de plusieurs ressources pédagogiques. Il est notamment l'auteur de plusieurs livres de littérature jeunesse. Léo-James a reçu le prix d'excellence André-Obadia de l'Association canadienne des professionnels d'immersion pour sa contribution exceptionnelle à la promotion de l'apprentissage du français au Canada. Léo-James est également lauréat de la Bourse Hilroy de la Fédération des enseignants et enseignantes francophones du Canada pour souligner son innovation pédagogique.

Léo-James Lévesque is an Assistant Professor with the School of Education at St. Thomas University, in Fredericton, New Brunswick.  He has more than 30 years of teaching experience in immersion programs. An expert in literacy, Léo-James's mission is to share his joy of reading and writing to children. He has published several educational resources which are used across Canada. He has authored several children's books. Léo-James received the André-Obadia Award of Excellence from the Canadian Association of Immersion Professionals for his exceptional contribution to the promotion of French learning in Canada. Léo-James is also the recipient of the Hilroy Fellowship Award presented to him by the Federation of Francophone Teachers of Canada to highlight his innovation in education.
