Background
Alberta Education has provided an annual grant of $716,000.00 per year for three years (2008-2009; 2009-2010; 2010-2011) for school jurisdictions in the Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium (ERLC) region to provide curriculum implementation support, which aligns with Alberta Education’s Curriculum Implementation schedule. The grant deliverables request that a comprehensive plan that meets the expectations of Alberta Education and matches the needs and direction of zone three districts is developed.
This report provides an overview of the programs and services ERLC provided to the region to support implementation.
ERLC’s work is influenced by beliefs represented in the ARPDC curriculum implementation beliefs: effective collaboration, effective practice and effective adult learning.

Collaboration and communication are the most essential elements for developing a regional plan to support implementation. Effective curriculum implementation is a shared responsibility for all stakeholders and the ERLC facilitates a collaborative process, primarily through advisory committees, to support stakeholders with their work supporting implementation. Consultative structures that model collaboration lead to deeper understanding about effective implementation approaches and a shared commitment to supporting adult learning for students’ sake. |
Learning opportunities provided are designed to build teachers*, (e.g., *all those involved with supporting student learning) capacity and practice. ERLC programs have the potential to support a teacher’s practice and professional growth plan based on the knowledge, skills and attributes required for permanent certification. ERLC programs are based on the content of the program of studies and/or the intent of ministry initiatives and instructional and assessment strategies that have the potential to best support student learning. |
Effective adult learning is meaningful, purposeful, timely and provided through a variety of learning opportunities. Adult learning is developmental and contextual, interactive, continuous and reflective. A wide variety of program designs exist and when developed in a comprehensive manner have the potential to form a most effective comprehensive plan. Effective implementation plans must be systemic, systematically planned and sustained to best support adult learning for students’ sake. |
