While students are learning the skills of reading, they must also develop a positive reading identity to remain engaged readers. Supporting both academic and personal reading goals, encouraging students’ reading choices, and providing regular opportunities for students to share their reading experiences, increases young people’s reading engagement and effort. In this workshop, participants will examine and discuss relevant research, classroom examples, instructional moves and strategies, and resources for supporting students’ self-selected reading and authentic responses.
