About this learning opportunity

How exciting is this!!?? Pipe ceremony! Indigenous teachings and dialogue! A traditional Indigenous Feast!  Oral history shared by Elder Jerry Saddleback! Treaty simulator activity!  Dr. Diana Steinhauer, who will provide the keynote presentation about Treaty 6, from an Indigenous perspective.

Join us for this experiential, interactive and engaging day, where you will deepen your understanding of the Indigenous perspectives on Treaty. As a special treat, you will be invited to participate in a traditional feast during the lunch break.  The session will end with guided discussion on how to apply the teachings in your educational context.  

As a result of this engaging and interactive day, you will walk away with a deeper understanding of Treaty, our relationships to the land, and each other.

About the facilitator(s)

 

Dr. Diana Steinhauer, Cree, from Saddle Lake Cree Nation in Treaty No. 6 Territory, is an educator with 30 years of experience in teaching, curriculum development, and administration in K-12 schools and post-secondary institutions. Most importantly, she is a mother and first teacher of her two children, Alexis and Ty. She currently splits her time into two roles; as k?-n?k?napistahk, at Treaty Governance at Onion Lake Cree Nation and as the Treaty, Language, and Culture Coordinator at Tribal Chiefs Education Foundation. Recognizing the value and work of iyiniw pim?tisiwin (Cree life) Diana’s work as a change agent in language, education, and research is grounded upon her late father’s adage, pim?tisîtotetân kimiyikowisiwininaw, ‘Let us live life the way our Creator intended us to live.

Jessica Daniels is Cree/ Metis from Edmonton, Alberta and has studied political science and philosophy at the University of Alberta, as well as Business Administration at NAIT. She has also had the privilege of working with Indigenous Elders throughout her career and  applies those teachings to everyday contexts in her work such as evaluation, data management, strategic planning, and building safe and trusting environments. She has designed and delivered workshops and presentations on many topics including sexual health, harm reduction, implementing program science, Métis research methodology and identity. She is an instructor in a certificate program that employs experiential learning and Indigenous perspectives on history, health, social justice and gender. She has developed curriculum at the post-secondary level on addiction, narrative approaches to recovery and treatment, colonialism and its impact on health.   She is the currently the Indigenous Consultant with the Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium.

Elder Jerry Saddleback Sr. is from Samson Cree Nation in Maskwacîs, AB. He is one of a handful of people who can recite the History of Creation Story and one of fewer people who knows the true history of the Origins of Cree Syllabics. His profound knowledge of Cree history and traditions conveys powerful intellectual and Spiritual insights into Cree Culture. Elder Jerry Saddleback is in high demand as a speaker and travels all over North America as requested by communities, educational institutions and other organizations such as the Truth and Reconciliation Commision of Canada, for whom he was 1 of 2 spiritual advisors. As a young man, Jerry was commissioned by the Confederacy of Treaty 6 to conduct research and gather the oral history of Treaty 6. He visited Elders to listen to the oral history and he carries that with him and infuses it in everything he does. He is a dynamic Storyteller and compassionate Teacher. Mr. Saddleback is currently the Elder-In-Residence and Dean of Cultural Studies at the Maskwacis Cultural College in Maskwacis.  

Jo-Ann Saddleback is a passionate advocate of Aboriginal cultural. She worked as a Policy Analyst/Researcher for women’s organizations and Executive Director for Metis Settlements General Council heading up Legal and Governmental Affairs. She also worked as a community developer for several years, travelling across North America developing and delivering workshops on Culture, Health, Roles and Rights of Aboriginal Women and cross-cultural workshops for RCMP, Corrections Canada, Alberta Health, Healthcare workers, Alberta Justice judges and crown prosecutors. She spent years visiting Old People in the First Nations and Metis communities in which she was delivering workshops and remains grateful they have entrusted her to continue to work in communities sharing their wisdom. She taught Cree Studies 101 and 121 about Culture, traditions and Family and Identity at Maskwacis Cultural College while Coordinator of Student Services

Corrie Ziegler has been an educator for over 36 years and prior to joining Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium, she worked as a teacher, principal, supervisor and director with Edmonton Public Schools. She has led AISI projects, managed teams, and has facilitated numerous sessions on a broad spectrum of topics related to teaching and learning.  Corrie believes in the power of collaboration and has coached numerous learning communities in working together to achieve high levels of engagement and learning for all students.
