About this Learning Opportunity

Purpose

This professional learning experience is being designed to provide an exciting opportunity for participants to explore a new way of learning together in the region. Observation of student learning in various contexts, thought provoking videos, research articles along with time for reflection, conversation and engagement in a design thinking protocol will create the inspiration to make one change to practice in each participant’s unique context.

The overarching guiding question for this learning road trip will be “how might we design authentic learning for our students that creates deeper engagement?”

Day 1: Road Trip to School Sites

Motorcoach pick up and drop off from the west-end of Edmonton

18521 Stony Plain Rd (Tim Horton’s parking lot)

Participants will travel to different school sites to observe a range of student learning experiences across early years, middle years and high school contexts. Between the visits at each site, there will be videos and conversations on board the motorcoach. Many of us have discovered that, often, the best learning from a conference or PD session takes place through conversations that occur “on the road” between sessions or on the drive home when we have uninterrupted time to process our observations and new learning with our colleagues.

Participants will will be immersed in several K-12 classrooms in 4 schools:
? Nature-Based Kindergarten at Chickakoo Lake
? Memorial Composite High School in Stony Plain
? Brookwood School in Spruce Grove (K-4)
? Ecole Broxton Park School in Spruce Grove (K-9)

Day 2: Educator Innovation Day

Prescott Learning Centre ( 340 Pioneer Road, Spruce Grove. (Easy access from 16A, turn right on Pioneer Road before reaching Spruce Grove if coming from Edmonton.)

Participants will have an opportunity to dive more deeply into beliefs around student learning, the process of change and creatively thinking about what might be possible in making one change to current practice. Day two will end with each participant having designed a plan, that is ready to implement, which will result in a positive impact on student learning.

Day 3: After School Follow-Up Session

Via videoconference

Participants will connect to:

  • Share with others where they are at in their implementation journey
  • Discuss successes and challenges with other participants
  • Provide feedback to each other about next steps
