About this learning opportunity
A "Go-To Educator" is any adult in a school that students turn to in a time of need.
This 2-day series facilitated by a educator for educators in the school setting, will focus on basic understanding of mental illness, and mental health. You will explore what educators need to know to become a GO-TO Educator.
Topics will include:
- The Brain: understanding Mental Health & Mental Illness
- The Causes of Mental Disorders
- Learn about the most commonly found mental illnesses in our Alberta classrooms
- Examine classroom behaviours of children with a diagnosed mental illness or poor mental health
- How to appropriately respond to the student in their time of need, and how to respond to parents
- Take time to explore pathways to care and
- the issues surrounding the stigma of mental health
This session addresses the LQS competencies

About the facilitator(s)
Michele Jones has been an educator for over 20 years and prior to joining Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium, she worked in the areas of teacher and student wellness, both at the district and school levels. Michele was trained as a Go-To Educator Core Trainer in 2017.
