About this Learning Opportunity

In any classroom across Alberta, teachers are working with students experiencing personal challenges that affect their ability to learn. Mental disorders like ADHD, anxiety and mental health problems like negative social interactions like bullying can interfere with the way students think, feel, act, and interact. These obstacles to student wellness can have a significant impact on student academic, career and social/emotional development. Schools are often one of the first places where overall wellness strategies are learned and the learning needs of students are supported. Although teachers do not diagnose or provide specialized medical care in schools, they are expected to create and sustain optimum learning environments and teach wellness strategies for all children. This includes creating a classroom environment where all students become competent 21st century learners. A competency 'lens' also encourages teachers and students to foster their emotional, intellectual, physical, social and/or spiritual wellness and recognize their strengths.

This session will begin by deepening understanding of how different mental disorders and problems can manifest in the classroom.  This knowledge will assist in connecting student wellness to Alberta’s 8 competencies. You will create an action plan to support positive mental health in the classroom. You will also have the opportunity to work collaboratively with colleagues to deepen your understanding of how a competency lens can foster a whole, healthy learner.

This learning opportunity is being provided through funding from Alberta Education.
