All Teachers, Administrators, District Leaders, Educational Assistants, Parents, Counselors, Social Workers, Therapists and everyone helping to promote mental wellness, social-emotional learning and healthy relationships in children.
About this learning opportunity
Learn how to address issues related to homophobia and transphobia in the classroom, access resources and curriculum materials, and have the opportunity for open dialogue on ways to approach sexual orientation and gender identity issues at all grade and topic levels.
You will better understand the lived and learned realities of sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ) children, youth and families and learn ways to create inclusive and safe environments to support diversity in our schools.
This learning opportunity is being provided through a grant from Alberta Education.
About the facilitator(s)
Melinda McNie is the Sexual and Gender Minority Education Facilitator for the Institute of Sexual Minority Studies and Services. She earned a Bachelor of Physical Education Degree and Masters Degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Alberta and has taught and counseled in schools for over thirty years. Melinda also teaches mental health and suicide awareness and intervention skills to junior and senior high students in the provincial Community Helpers Program. She is a certified Emotional Fitness Coach, yoga practitioner and ardent lover of travel, adventure and participating fully in her own life.
