About this learning opportunity
Response to Intervention (RTI) is a process designed to provide quality research-based interventions to struggling learners. This session will explore strategies that are research-proven for math achievement. You will learn the methods for implementing and assessing the progress of these strategies.
You will receive an overview of some interventions and assessment strategies that Alberta districts are currently using including:
- Academy of Math
- Power of Ten
This learning opportunity is subsidized as a result of a grant from Alberta Education to support implementation.
About the facilitator(s)
Cara Shores, EdS, began her career as a special education teacher and taught children in both pullout and inclusive classrooms. She received her master's degree and educational specialist degree from the University of West Georgia and has since served as Student Support Services Coordinator and District Director of Special Education. Since 1999, Cara has provided keynote and feature presentations for numerous organizations including the Council for Exceptional Children, National Council for Administrators in Special Education, National Middle School Association, Student Services Administrators Association of Manitoba (Canada), Student Assistance Professional Association, Kansas MTSS Symposium, the Georgia Association of Educational Leaders, Iona College RTI Symposium, Texas Tech University RTI Symposium, Edmonton Regional Learning Consortium, Calgary Regional Consortium, and Southern Alberta Professional Development Council. Cara has provided services for several federal grants including Project WINS Inclusion Grant, Project Winning Team Inclusion Grant, School Improvement Grant for lowest performing schools, and Race to the Top. In addition, she has worked closely with a large number of school districts to implement school improvement processes. She works monthly in local schools to provide assistance as well as stay current on issues facing teachers and administrators.
In 2009, Cara began publishing with Corwin Press. Her first book, Response to Intervention: A Practical Guide for Every Teacher, was released in 2007 and immediately became a best seller. She is also author of Using RTI for School Improvement: Raising Every Student's Achievement Scores (2009, also a best seller) and A Comprehensive Approach to RTI: Integrating Behavioral and Academic Interventions (2009). In 2011, she served as editor of Response to Intervention: Best of Corwin. In that same year, Cara was named a Corwin Press Million Dollar Author.
Cara lives in North Georgia with her husband, Scott and son, Wesley. When not working, she enjoys gardening, scrapbooking, singing in her church choir, and spending time with her family.
