About this learning opportunity

In order to embrace the philosophy of the revised program of studies, teachers need to create opportunities for students to construct their own meaning through problem solving. This session will focus on how you can be "less helpful" by teaching through problems, asking good questions, supporting personal strategies, and encouraging multiple solutions. Through this differentiated approach, students will learn to think for themselves and increase their mathematical power.

Example activities, strategies and resources will be shared and experienced.  Topics will include circles, digital & SMART Board resources, differentiation with open and parallel tasks, as well as some playing & planning time.

Please bring a fully charged laptop for these sessions.

About the facilitator(s)

Cathy Campbell has been with Edmonton Public Schools for 20 years and has taught both division 2 and 3 students with the majority of her work being in junior high. She is currently a math consultant for the school district along with being a member of the ERLC math team. She is passionate about mathematics and believes that every student can be successful in mathematics. She is committed to and believes that every student can be successful in mathematics. She provides assistance and guidance with the implementation of the revised math program of studies. She is a life-long learner and benefits from social networking which allows her to learn from other globally-connected educators. Incorporating the use of technology into education is an interest of hers as well. Cathy is married to a teacher and they have four children that range from 8 to 21 years of age.
