Cross-Curricular Competencies

The Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans Steering Committee Report (April 2010) outlines the vision, guiding principles, and values for Alberta’s education system. The Education Act, along with the Ministerial Order on Student Learning (#001/2013), guides the development of curriculum. Cross-curricular competencies are identified in the ministerial order.

A cross-curricular competency is an interrelated set of attitudes, skills and knowledge that are drawn upon and applied to a particular context for successful learning and living. They are developed by every student, in every grade and across every subject/discipline area.

“Two page” learning guides and a poster identifying and describing the cross curricular competencies have been developed to support your awareness and understanding.  Access these PD resources at http://erlc.ca/resources/resources/cross_curricular_competencies_overview/

ERLC regional team (Literacy, Math/Numeracy and Leadership implementation support)  is available to support your work becoming aware of and understanding the ministerial order and the cross curricular competencies.  Upcoming “curriculum redesign” learning opportunities are posted at http://www.erlc.ca/programs/theme.php?theme=66 or email us at info@erlc.ca for contact information and to share your request.
